John Graham1 (M)
Pop-up Pedigree

John Graham was born circa 1747. Although earlier histories have given John's birth year as 1741, it is more likely that he was born in 1747. First, his reported age at death places his birth circa 1747. Second, before the founding of Halifax in 1749 there was only one English-speaking settlement in Nova Scotia - Annapolis. With the hostility between English-speaking and French-speaking people during this time, it is very unlikely that the Grahams would have settled at unprotected Three Fathom Harbour in 1741. John's father, James, is recorded as receiving a land allotment at Halifax Town in 1749 - Lot J18 in the south suburbs (Allotment book, p 59). It is most likely that John's parents arrived in Nova Scotia c 1749 and settled first at Halifax.2 He was the son of James Graham and Rosanna MacLaughlin.3 John Graham married Mary Scott, daughter of Joseph Scott and Mary Edmands, on 29 October 1772 at St Paul's Anglican Church, Halifax, Halifax Co, Nova Scotia.4 John Graham died on 24 February 1819 at Three Fathom Harbour, Halifax Co, Nova Scotia; at age 71.5 His estate was probated on 8 June 1819 at Probate Court, Halifax, Halifax Co, Nova Scotia.3
He and Mary Scott lived at Three Fathom Harbour, Halifax Co, Nova Scotia.3
We are fortunate that the baptismal and marriage records for many of the descendants of John Graham and Mary Scott have survived and are available to us. For records before the mid 19th century, when we examine the baptismal records closely, we note that there are often several events recorded on the same day for several families from the same village. It is very likely that a minister, priest or deacon from the church was on circuit to the village and that the sacrament was performed by the church but not at the church. Although we accept the recorded dates and residence locations as accurate, we caution the reader that the baptisms and marriages may have not been performed at the church where the event was recorded.
