Ruth Law was born on 2 October 1899 at 3 John Street, Glasgow, Scotland.1 She was dedicated in 1899 at Caledonian Hall, Glasgow, Scotland. She was the daughter of Charley Law and Sarah Ann King. Ruth Law married Ernest John Bent, son of Arthur Reinforth Bent and Annie Elizabeth Porter, on 12 June 1920 at Victoria, BC. They were married at the home of Ruth at 935 North Park Street. Arthur and Annie Bent lived at 2533 Prior Street at that time. There was another newspaper article that said they were married at the old Victoria Citadel (Salvation Army Church) at Broad Street and Pandora which I believe what happened rather than North Park Street The marriage took place at 3:00 by Commandant Jaynes of the Salvation Army. Ruth wore a traveling suit of navy blue and hat to match. She was given away by her father and was attended by her sister Catherine Law. The groom was supported by Joseph Law. They left on the 4:30 boat for Seattle and Portland. They returned to live at 3015 Cedar Hill Road. The Salvation Army band gave them a table and chair.2 Ruth Law died on 30 January 1984 at Victoria, BC.3 She was buried at Hatley Memorial Gardens, Victoria, BC, Plot Colwood F283 W1/2.
She resided at 3015 Cedar Hill Road, Victoria, BC, for more than 50 years before her death.
She became a Canadian citizen on 18 January 1973. She was a landed immigrant for so many years. When she wanted to travel to Hong Kong, she applied for her Canadian Citizenship.
June (Martin) Perry recalls: "I lived with Grandma and Grandpa until I was 9 at 3015 Cedar Hill Road. They moved to 3015 Cedar Hill Road shortly after they were married and stayed there until they moved to 308-1625 Richmond Road, I believe 50 years after they married. I have fond memories of them. Grandma never worked outside the home, but entertained people constantly, especially people who had lost a spouse. She lost a son, Eric, to cancer (a lump under his arm) in 1954 when he was 21. She found this very difficult to deal with.
"Some of the things she did: home league leader, sang in the songsters in her earlier years, babysat me after school; was a very strong person; gave generously of her time to others; always had her house opened to anyone; never wore women's pants, i.e. pant suits, sang to me when I was a child, excellent cook known for her famous mushroom soup and stewed hamburger; never butted in our family when we lived in their basement suite, took her turn in looking after mother-in-law when she was living at May Gregson's house, i.e. staying overnight, doing laundry. When she used to babysit me on Monday nights when mum and dad bowled, I used to sit on the steps going upstairs to the bedrooms and peer down and watch T.V. The only show she went to was the Sound of Music as she did not believe in them. Attended the Glasgow II Corps when she was a child in Scotland."
