Martha Ann Reynolds1
To learn more about the early descendants of Edmund Rice visit the Edmund Rice (1638) Association,. Martha Ann Reynolds was born circa 1824.1 She married 1st Royal Harvey Hazelton III, son of Royal Harvey Hazelton and Mehitabel Arms, on 21 December 1839 at Greene County, MO; by William G Summers, JP.1 Martha Ann Reynolds and Royal Harvey Hazelton III were divorced before 1871.1 Martha Ann Reynolds died before 1881 at Greene County, MO.1 Her estate was probated in 1881 at Greene County, MO; where her estate was distributed to her surviving children. Each received $3.35.1
In 1849 Royal Harvey Hazelton III joined the rush for gold, traveling to California with his two brothers-in law. Although he had no success with mining, the trip did introduce him to the opportunities of the west coast. As a young man he had learned the trade of wagon repairman, so after having seven children in Missouri, his family joined a wagon train to the Oregon country. On this long, difficult trip, they lost their youngest son, Samuel, on the banks of the Snake River in Idaho. Upon his arrival in Lane County, Oregon (where another five children were born), Royal secured a Donation Land Claim on land that is now downtown Eugene, Oregon. The Lane County Historical Society newsletter of September 1976 says: "... according to a recently found article on our earliest history, the city of Eugene might well have been names Royal or Hazelton. Royal Hazelton is credited with having taken up the exact claim on the West side of the Butte before Eugene Skinner arrived. Plans to build a log house were interrupted when Mr Hazelton became disenchanted and moved on south." Whether Martha Ann became disenchanted with the geographical area or with her mate, we do not know, but the marriage ended in divorce, and Martha Ann and their youngest son, George, age 4, returned to Greene County, Missouri.1

It is likely that this is the Alfred Rice enumerated in the 1880 US Census at: Easton, Ionia County, Michigan with wife Pauline. Then again, there is no direct evidence of a connection, other than the match of age and birthplace. More research is needed to establish his identity, as well as the number and names of his wives. If he was the Easton resident, then he apparently had at least two wives, and Pauline was presumably the mother of his son Charles. He and Pauline A. (?) appeared on the census of 1880 at Easton, Ionia Co, MI; Alfred Rice, self, male, married, age 49, born MA, Occ: Foundry Business, father born MA, mother born MA; Pauline A.
